Free oxygen radicals are now recognized as a major cause of damage to many
of the body's systems, and in particular to the skin when exposed to the sun.
Researchers, seeking ways to protect human skin, looked to the plant world.
As plants evolved over millions of years, they developed certain pigments or
chemicals called Flavonoids to protect themselves from the stress of the sun.
