Acne is a persistent and distressing condition that affects up to 85% of adolescents and adults.
High and fluctuating hormone levels cause overproduction of sebum and swelling of the
sebaceous glands. The excess sebum is oxidized – which produces the blackness of
blackheads – and this produces ideal conditions for the growth of bacteria, notably
propionibacterium acnes, which are present on healthy skin. The body’s response to this
bacterial growth produces inflammation which, in severe cases, can cause scarring.
Conventional medical treatments for acne typically treat only the infection but do little to
treat the underlying causes of acne or to prevent future outbreaks. Conventional treatments
may have severe side effects including depression and birth defects.
